"Immersive shipwrecks": first public presentation at Peniche, to mark the 240 years of San Pedro de Alcantara shipwreck

To mark the 240 years since the Spanish ship San Pedro de Alcântara shipwrecked near Peniche, the Peniche Municipality and the Lusófona University co-organized an event for the local community, which took place at the Centro Cívico Intergeracional Prof. Rogério Cação last February 1st, 2026.

The Peniche Municipality was represented by its president, Filipe Sales, who welcomed all those present at the event. The panel of speakers included Jean-Yves Blot, the nautical archaeologist co-responsible for the discovery of the shipwreck site in the 1980s, who discussed the transdisciplinary horizons of the research initiated in 1985 in Peniche. The current director of the Portuguese Maritime Museum, Augusto António Alves Salgado, focused his intervention on the importance of public enjoyment of maritime cultural heritage and local memories. Also participating in this session was Rui Venâncio, a local historian and senior technician at the Peniche Municipality, whose presentation centered on the marks and memories of the San Pedro de Alcantara in the local community.

Concluding the event, the principal researcher of “Immersive Shipwrecks,” Célia Quico, gave a brief presentation and demonstration of the pilot project funded by WIRE FilmEU, which is in its final stages of production. As part of the dissemination activities, the project team is co-organizing a demonstration of the 360º video with students and teachers from the Peniche Secondary School at the end of April. The first formal presentation of the 360º video “Immersive Shipwrecks” is scheduled to take place on April 15th in Lisbon, as part of the WIRE Summit, organized by the Lusófona University.
