Great Love Reimagined

The project will realize something that is impossible to witness without the aid of modern technology – allowing audience to see the movement of natural light on a white painting on white canvas. Through technological manipulation, Estonian legendary artist Sirje Runge’s monumental 10-meter painting “Great Love” will become something, that is not a time lapse, but rather a “time painting”, that allows for visual effects to emerge otherwise unseen to human eye. The resulting video art piece invites the audience to enjoy the invisible brushstrokes becoming visible and changing form, as if nature itself was creating the painting. It also invites the audience to ponder upon the philosophical questions of time (an interpretation of Henry Bergson’s concept of durée) as they witness time passing on a scale otherwise unavailable to human perception. This project brings retired legendary Estonian artist Sirje Runge back into the art scene, with a new reimagination of her art that was not possible during the earlier stages of her career.
