FilmEU, the European Universities Alliance for Film and Media Arts, is pioneering innovative approaches to artistic research through a collaborative framework that connects eight higher education institutions across Europe. Responding to the growing need for interdisciplinary and practice-based research structures, FilmEU has developed a joint research agenda supported by dynamic clusters, research pilots, centres of excellence, and shared infrastructure.
More than 120 researchers are currently engaged in 17 collaborative initiatives designed to foster experimentation, innovation, and long-term research capacity. Through a Joint Research Office, FilmEU coordinates funding strategies, research management, open science practices, and dissemination activities, helping to overcome institutional fragmentation and strengthen international competitiveness.
The alliance also promotes visibility and societal impact through joint publications, policy-focused observatories, and annual Artistic Research Exhibitions. This integrated model enhances research excellence while contributing to the recognition and legitimization of artistic research as a vital source of knowledge and innovation in Europe.
